CITB Health, Safety & Environment Test FAQs

The Blue CSCS Card demonstrates competence within your trade, allowing you to progress your construction career as a skilled worker.

What does CSCS stand for?

CSCS stands for Construction Skills Certification Scheme.

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme began as a way to assess the competence and qualifications of approved workers in construction. Since its conception in 1995, it is now one of the main details that employers search for when gauging the experience and reliability of a construction worker.

Once completed, your CSCS card will allow you to take on relevant responsibilities in construction related areas in the United Kingdom dependant on which level of CSCS card you have registered for and acquired.

You must have completed an NVQ Level 2 or an employer sponsored apprenticeship in order to apply for a blue skilled worker card. Regardless of the number of years you have working in the construction industry or on sites, you will need the required evidence in the form of a CSCS card to prove your competency in the job role.

Alongside an NVQ (SVQ in Scotland), workers are required to have completed and secured a pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test (HS&E) in order to apply for their CSCS card. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is multiple choice and will assess the key areas of operatives working safely on construction sites and in dangerous buildings. The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test is separate from the previously mentioned apprenticeships and NVQs, therefore you will need to apply for the CITB qualification separately.

A Blue CSCS Card is valid for 5 years. After your card has expired, you will need to renew it. Depending on the nature of your qualification, your current role and your occupation, you may be required to pass additional online training courses or a relevant refresher course to keep up to date with the latest requirements for site workers.

To renew a CSCS Blue Card, it is best done via the CSCS online application service. You can also contact CSCS directly on the phone via 0344 994 4777. The same process can be followed if your card has been stolen, lost, or damaged.

CSCS issue a variety of cards that reflect the required training courses and qualifications site workers must complete to perform their desired role. Other construction related CSCS cards include the CSCS Gold Card, CSCS Black Card, and CSCS Green Card. Each card refers to a different kind of construction site role and is offered referred to by colour. Whether you are looking to be a supervisor, perform a manager’s role or labourer’s job role, you can visit each card page now to find out the training and pass requirements needed.
